October 30, 1982 - The Family that fishes
together... |
Large bait schools were being found about 1 mile east of the "43" -
about 38 miles west of Point Loma. Around these huge "meat balls" were
large numbers of marlin which often were found directly on the high
spot. And so, bundling up the whole family we ran out there for a try.
Most of the marlin activity seemed to be on the "43" - not at the bait
balls. The plan was simple - simply troll back and forth directly over
the spot. It was 1/2 to 1 mile south, turn around and go north, back
south, occasionally to one side or the other.
I kept this up and our efforts paid off. A marlin came up on the jigs with Carolyn on the rods and Kenneth dropped a bait back resulting in a double hook-up. Carolyn, not being much of a stand-up angler, and certainly not one to run to the bow, sat in the fighting chair with Kenneth following his fish, occasionally circumnavigating the boat. Once we got Carolyn's fish it was simple to take off after Kenneth's and get that one as well. So back to the back and forth routine and it, once again, paid off with Daniel hooking up on another jig fish which we managed to get. 3 fish for the family wasn't a bad day. Not much happened thereafter so we simply trolled back towards "the Point." But as we crossed the "182" at the bottom of the the "Ridge" another jig strike and Dad almost got in on the family act. But, as jig fish often do, this one jumped about and then threw the jig back in our direction. Close call, but no cigar. Still, a great day and a great picture. |
